“Barassi” back on centre stage
“Barassi”, a new stage play that opens in late September, brings to life the epic tale that crosses generations and suburban Melbourne clans.
So it’s of no real surprise then that the great Ronald Dale Barassi should again be front and centre by way of a stage play saluting his contributions to Carlton and to football in general - for few have given the great Australian game more than him.
“Barassi” brings to life the epic tale that crosses generations and suburban Melbourne clans. Although uniquely Australian, it is both universal and timeless.
The story opens in World War II with the tragic death in Libya of Ron’s father, Ron Snr - himself a champion footballer, and one of the Rats of Tobruk. It follows the development of young Ron, who, under the care and mentorship of legendary coach Norm Smith, emerges as one of football’s most driven competitors.
Ever driven to challenge himself, and live up to the impossible memory of his father, Barassi takes on the game as a spectacularly successful player and later coach, commandeering both Carlton and North Melbourne to Grand Final triumphs, whilst having to cope with the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune both personal and professional.
And what drives this 72 year-old man to rush to the defence of a woman being beaten in the street?
Tee O’Neill’s play about this remarkable Australian will truly uplift and inspire you.
