It means Curnow is now available for senior selection this season.
Carlton General Manager - Football Operations Steven Icke said that Curnow, previously rookied to Adelaide in 2008, had earned his elevation in the weeks and months since being named by the club with its first selection in last December’s rookie draft (selection 18 overall).
“Ed was a highly-touted player for the Box Hill Hawks in the VFL last year, prior to incurring a season-ending broken ankle, and what we’ve since seen confirms why he was so highly-touted there,” Icke said.
“He’s displayed good form in the NAB Cup and the NAB Challenge Series, and his on-field ability, coupled with his uncompromising work ethic, means he has earned his chance.”
Carlton Development & Academy Manager and Northern Bullants Senior Coach Darren Harris concurred with Icke’s sentiments.
“He (Curnow) is making a really big impact on the playing group and I know the coaching staff as well, with his diligence, hard work and the way he’s generally performed on-field,” Harris said. “He’s obviously had a go at it before, he knows what’s required and his work ethic has been excellent.”
Under AFL ruling, a club is entitled to nominate either a veteran or rookie. As Carlton does not boast an eligible “veteran” it was positioned to elevate Curnow.
