CARLTON full-back Michael Jamison has backed ruckman Matthew Kreuzer to make his comeback from a knee reconstruction early in the 2011 season.

On Monday Kreuzer took the lead in the Blues' bike ride to Sorrento, where they will hold a five-day training camp, and Jamison has been impressed with the ruckman's condition so early in the pre-season campaign.

"I'm not sure if there's a specific date [for his return], but if you asked him it would probably be round one," Jamison said shortly before the Blues departed Visy Park on Monday.

"That's just the sort of kid he is. He's going really well. If someone in the club was going to hurt their knee - which is not ideal - but in terms of someone who is going to get back as quick as possible, he's the bloke.

"He's done a tremendous amount of work. He was in here all of the off-season, so he'll be back as soon as anyone [could be]."

Carlton players will be put through some gruelling sessions at the seaside camp with Jamison also keen to use the opportunity to get better acquainted with the club's new draftees and assistant coaches with Alan Richardson, Gavin Brown and John Barker all joining the club in the off-season.

"We've got new coaches in and they've brought fresh ideas into the club so the group is probably just trying to learn those ideas and get to know the coaches," he said adding the coaching staff will look to further refine the game plan ahead of the 2011 season.

"I think every team has a look at the finalists to see what they did better than your club. You try and match their ideas, but also try and keep working to your strengths as well.

"No doubt we'll have a look at St Kilda and Collingwood in the off-season and see what we can replicate from them.

"We'll still trying to tinker with that zone a little bit, but also play to our strengths and hopefully come out on top."

The Blues brought in some tall defensive options at the recent NAB AFL Draft and Jamison said the camp would be an important part of their induction into the club.

The draftees, including first-round pick Matthew Watson and second-rounder Patrick McCarthy, were excused from the bike ride, but Jamison has been impressed with what he's seen from his new backline teammates.

"Hopefully they can give us a hand down back. They are big boys. I think they breed them bigger every year," he said.

"Big Matty and Patrick are both out training with us already and looking pretty good. Once they learn the ropes around the club I'm sure they'll go well.

"It's only early obviously, they've only come in this week and are pretty modified so far, but Matty doesn't look out of place. He's kicking the ball pretty well and making good decisions, which is what you look for in a new kid.

"He's obviously got the size, so once he gets his fitness up a little bit, he's a good chance [to play early]."

At the other end of the scale, veterans Andrew Walker and Bret Thornton didn't enjoy the most stable of off-seasons, with the pair keen to explore trade options during the player exchange period, but Jamison said both were now firmly focussed on the year ahead.

"They've both been really positive and are looking to put that behind them," he said.

"There's always guys at that time of the year whose names get thrown up, so they're just looking forward to the new year and starting afresh I think.

"Bret's in rehab and he's setting the standard there. He's been really diligent in trying to get his shoulder right again. I don't think he's far away from joining the main group.

"Walks, as always at this time of the year, is setting the standard on the track in running the best times."
