World Champ at Carlton
Undefeated World Super Featherweight champion, Will Tomlinson, was back at Visy Park today as he prepares to defend his world title next Friday night.
‘Wild Will’ did some work in the boxing ring at Visy Park with his trainer Lincoln Hudson, much to the delight of the Carlton players who surrounded the ring following a training session this morning.
Following his sharp training session Will invited Marc Murphy to join him in the ring. Thankfully for Carlton fans, and Murphy, it was our number 3 that wore the gloves while Wild Will absorbed Murphy’s punches with the boxing pads.
Murphy said it was great to step into the ring with Tomlinson and said even after a few minutes it was not only fun but Tomlinson gave his plenty of tips in a short space of time.
As for his future in the boxing ring Murphy was quick to say he would be sticking to football and not continue on with the ‘Mad Dog Murphy’ name given to him by his team-mates as he stepped into the ring with ‘Wild Will’.
Tomlinson spoke to the Carlton players late last year after he won the IBG Super Featherweight title in Perth over Mexico’s Alan Herrera. This talk, and his ongoing work with members of Carlton’s Elite Performance Unit who assist in his preparations for fights, have ensured the boy who grew up in Bairnsdale in country Victoria has a close affiliation with the Carlton Football Club.
“Thanks to my dad I have been an Essendon supporter all my life but now I really have two teams. I know that is not supposed to happen but I do follow both teams very closely,” Tomlinson said after spending time in the boxing ring with Murphy.
Tomlinson will headline his first televised show next Friday night, May 18 when he takes on Mexican Daniel Ruiz live nationally on Fox Sports 2 from 8:00pm. Tickets for the world title defence at the Melbourne Pavilion are sold out.
