Committee makes history at Carlton
An historical committee has convened to assist with the lofty task of preserving Carlton history
As the Carlton Football Club closes in on the 150th anniversary of its formation in 1864, an historical committee has convened to assist with the lofty task of preserving Carlton history.
Members of the committee, including former Carlton premiership footballers Ian Collins, David McKay and Geoff Southby, Carlton director Greg Lee, journalist/author Tony De Bolfo, The Blueseum website’s Jamie Sanderson and club historian Stephen Williamson, met at Visy Park this week to consider a range of issues relating to the preservation, archiving and storage of memorabilia for future display in the new facility’s main foyer.
McKay, a four-time premiership player and the only Carlton footballer in history to participate in three Grand final victories over Collingwood, said that the new Visy Park facility now provided the backdrop to what ought be a celebration of the football club and the suburb.
“Carlton’s got a very long and proud history, and it’s important that the club and peoples connected with the club do what we can to preserve some of the documents and artefacts that have been around the club and the community for a long time,” McKay told carltonfc.com.au’s CFC TV.
One of the committee’s first tasks is to source an original Carlton lace-up guernsey with chamois yoke, which pre-dates the 1909 season.
Interested parties can contact Tony De Bolfo at the club on 9387 1400.
