Judd back on deck
Carlton captain Chris Judd has returned to the training track following shoulder surgery last month
CARLTON captain Chris Judd has resumed training with the Blues' main group after a minor interruption to his pre-season.
Judd underwent surgery on his troublesome shoulder in December, sparking concern that his 2012 campaign could be affected.
But the dual Brownlow medallist was back with the main group on Friday in Carlton's first week back since the Christmas/New Year break.
Judd took part in running and goalkicking drills but avoided contact work as a precautionary measure. It was unclear if his shoulder was strapped as he was wearing sleeves.
Teammate Michael Jamison said the club was pleased with the progress of its star midfielder.
"I think he's well ahead of schedule even though the surgery was quite minor in the end anyway so he'll probably have another couple of weeks with no contact and then he'll be back," Jamison said.
"He'll certainly play in the NAB Cup. To what extent I'm not sure but we would have thought he'd play at least the last couple of NAB Cup games."
Jamison is also looking to take part in the NAB Cup as he recovers from his own injury woes.
The 25-year-old missed seven weeks towards the end of 2011 as he battled with injury problems. He returned for Carlton's final three games, including both finals, and while he admits not being at full fitness for those matches, he wasn't far off his best.
"It's rare to find a guy at the end of the year who doesn't have a little niggle. I put my hand up in games where I thought I could add a little bit to the team and the games I wasn't quite right, I sat out and got right for the finals," he said.
"I was limited before Christmas but now we're back. I'm back into full training and full contact."
Jamison's absence meant a shift to defence for Lachlan Henderson, who proved himself more than capable as a backman.
Henderson has been training with the defenders over pre-season and Jamison said he was looking forward to spending more time with him at that end of the ground.
"I hope so, it would make my job easier. He did really well last year and he fit in really well. I'd like to play alongside him," he said.
"I think we've got 10 guys who can go through those six spots this year so it's going to be a fair bit of competition in the backline."
