CARLTON coach Brett Ratten is unsure whether star full-forward Brendan Fevola can kick 100 goals this season, but has backed the AFL's ban on fans running on to the ground if he does.
Ratten highlighted player safety as the main issue behind his support of the ban.
"I think the AFL are probably on the right path there. It is dangerous now to just let people come on the ground so I think they'll just look after the players' welfare," Ratten said from Princes Park on Wednesday.
"They'll do what's in the best interests of the teams and the player.
"What's the risk? You just don't know when there are a lot of people and you've just got to be careful, don't you? You wouldn't want any spectators to get injured let alone any of the players … when people are in a mad rush.
"They might even have security now at the Myer stocktake sale to make sure that no one gets an injury going up the stairs; it's something very similar.
"I think a lot of things have changed, haven't they? Like kicking the ball on the ground after games and things like that, this might be just another part of the game evolving into the next millennium."
Fevola needs 16 goals in the remaining three games, but Ratten said he would not be deviating from his 'team first' approach in order to help him reach the milestone.
"If it's meant to be it'll happen. If it's meant to be for Brendan and he kicks a hundred then that's fantastic, but if not we just worry about winning the four points as a group," he said.
"If we can keep winning we might give ourselves another week to give him a chance, but at the moment it's just about what the team can do, not what he can do.
"We won't be going out of our way – running into open goals and kicking the ball at right angles [to Fev] when the goal should be kicked.
"Let's just kick the goal and get back to the centre."
