In 2008, through our partnership with Visy, Carlton’s community involvement will include education programs relating to the environment in a pro-active campaign to increase awareness of recycling and our environment. This is part of Carlton’s objective to become the most environmentally friendly club in the AFL. “Ratten’s Recycling” is a regular update from Brett Ratten on how the Club and supporters can make a difference.
SCHOOL
School is a great place to teach kids about the environment and recycling. Teaching school children positive habits will make for a greener community in the future. Classroom activities and school lunches generate a lot of rubbish which could be recycled, read on for some useful tips.
Fact: On average we throw out 10 times our body weight in rubbish per year and up to 2/3 of this can be composted!
Getting to school
- Try to walk or ride your bike to school
- Car pooling with other families is a greener way of getting to school
Get efficient
- Use recyclable products for projects, homework, art and craft.
- Make sure your school has a water tank
- Switch off lights when you leave the classroom
Getting sorted
- Place all paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans in recycling bins
Go green
- Start a veggie patch and munch at lunch on school grown produce
- Plant shady trees in the playground
- Plant flowers and native shrubs to attract bird wildlife
- Start a compost bin for food scraps – and start a worm farm!
