Everyone who attends Carlton’s home game against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday will be part of football history.

Saturday’s game will be the 2,500th AFL match to be played at the MCG.

Carlton historian Stephen Williamson confirmed that Saturday’s match will be Carlton’s 368th game at the MCG and a victory against the Bombers will give the Blues a 50% winning ratio at the home of football. Currently Carlton has won 181 matches, lost 182 and drawn 4 in 367 appearances at the MCG.

The average crowd at the 351 Carlton matches played at the MCG where crowd numbers have been recorded is 53,854 with a total of 18,902,882 people attending these 351 matches.

Carlton and Essendon have played 56 matches at the MCG with the Blues winning 23, Essendon 30 and 3 games ending with scores level. Melbourne (95 games) and Collingwood (59 games) are the only sides Carlton has played on more occasions than Essendon at the MCG.

Melbourne, the first team to play a home game at the MCG, has played the most games at the venue (1,120). While Carlton was the second team to play a home game at the MCG when the round 12 match in 1897 was transferred from Princes Park.

The MCG is one of 30 venues where Carlton has played an AFL match:
