CARLTON captain Chris Judd says his team's ability to find goalkicking assistance for full-forward Brendan Fevola will be crucial in determining just how far it goes in 2009.
Judd’s counterparts agreed that the Blues will be the big movers this season, with all 15 rivals believing they will jump into the top eight after finishing 11th last year.
The majority also thought Fevola was the man to lead them into September, with 10 predicting he will be this year's Coleman Medallist.
Kicking 99 goals from 22 games, Fevola was second to Hawthorn's Lance Franklin in 2008.
While Carlton's often-unsettled backline has drawn scrutiny in recent seasons, Judd knows others in the forward half must take greater responsibility should their go-to man find things tough.
"I think one of the big things we’ve got to do this year is get another option in our forward line," Judd said.
"Obviously you need more than one avenue to goal, but [it would be] for Fev as well. If we continue to be so Fev-focused, then obviously some teams can afford to put keep putting two, three or four blokes in front of Fev because they know there are no other avenues to goals.
"To become a better team we need to get another couple of targets up there to hopefully kick us more scores but really take the load off Fev as well."
An apparent trend of greater numbers in the defensive half – or a zone defence – might make an afternoon or evening's work even harder for Fevola this season.
But Judd said Fevola was probably used to having opponents drop back into his area.
"I think even last year there was always two or three blokes standing in his space," he said.
"The zoning, at this stage, looks to be the flavour of the month but someone will come up with a way to combat that."
