Carlton v Geelong – The recent results

Carlton will be very keen to turn the tables on Geelong at The Dome on Saturday night as Geelong has won all five matches played between the two teams at the venue. Of the last ten matches played between Carlton and Geelong he Cats have won six including the last three straight.

Although in his first year as captain of the Club it will not be the first time Lance Whitnall has led the team against Geelong. He was the acting captain in round 14 last year when Anthony Koutoufides was out of the side injured. On that occasion Geelong had a 65 point victory in front of 32,096 at The Dome. A bigger crowd is expected on Saturday night, together with a different result for Carlton supporters.

Carlton supporters looking for omens need to see the last time these two teams met in round 2, in 2004 when Carlton went into the game as outsiders and were far too good for Geelong winning by 54-points. The last ten matches:

July 8, 2006 - Round 14 – The Dome - Carlton 11-11-77 v Geelong 23-4-142 - Geelong by 65-points

August 15, 1999 - Round 20 – MCG - Carlton 15-14-104 v Geelong 17-11-113 - Geelong by 9-points

Carlton supporters in particular will remember the loss to Geelong in round 11, 2002 when the Cats kicked a goal after the siren to steal the victory. Simon Wiggins will never forget that game as he stood on the mark while the final kick was taken and while he actually touched the ball as it went over his head, the touch was not hard enough for the umpire to notice and the all-clear was signaled giving Geelong a come from behind victory after the siren.

Another game that Carlton supporters will never forget is the round 22 match played at Optus Oval when the Blues were far too good running out easy winners by 70-points. It wasn’t the victory that supporters remember as much as the scenes in the crowd when Stephen Silvagni was cleaned up late in the game. The action by the Geelong player, who was dragged to the bench, moved one Carlton supporter to leap onto the players dug out to ensure the Geelong player knew that he had done the wrong thing. Thankfully there was no action from the supporter, just verbal abuse.
