JORDAN Russell has left Carlton and will be seeking a new club in free agency after the two parties decided to part ways this week.

Russell, 25, played 116 games with the Blues after being selected ninth overall at the 2004 NAB AFL Draft, but made just seven senior appearances this season, which led to the split.

"It was very much a mutual decision," Russell's manager Marty Pask said on Friday.

"Both parties thought that it was in the best interests of Jordan to explore his opportunities as a free agent.

"It's just the time where Jordan needs to look for an opportunity where he can play senior footy consistently and Carlton aren't going to stand in his way.

"He wants to play that role as a rebounding defender, which he has obviously been pretty good at doing in the past finishing high up in the club's best and fairest count.

"We just want to make sure that he gets that opportunity and he's not going to get that at Carlton.

"They believe they have three or four players who can fill that role and Jordan believes that's where he plays his best football, so it's a matter of locating a club that needs him to play that position."

Pask said that there was no animosity between the parties over the decision with Russell thankful for the opportunities he received during his time at the club.

While he wouldn't be drawn on where Russell, who is an unrestricted free agent, would end up, he said there had already been interest from "multiple" clubs.

Fellow defender Paul Bower is also understood to have been told his time at Visy Park has come to an end.
