Carlton’s Apparel Sponsor, Nike has confirmed that Melbourne will help stage the world’s biggest one day running event the Nike+ Human Race, on Sunday August 31st. An estimated one million runners are expected to be involved in this event for charity. 25 cities will hold a 10km run including Melbouren, Los Angeles, New York, London, Madrid, Paris, Istanbul, Shanghai, Sao Paulo and Vancouver.

Each race will start on the same day with the first starting in Taipei and the last in LA. Melbourne is the only Australian city to host a race and it will be third off the start line. The Melbourne course winds past local landmarks including Federation Square, the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Yarra River, with runner aferwards treated to an exclusive music concert in the Myer Music Bowl. The concert will feature hip-hop artists The Hilltop Hoods and rock band Faker.

Runners can support one of three official charities: the WWF - the global conservation organisation addressing the causes and impacts of climate change; the UN refugee agency's ninemillion.org campaign – bringing sport and education to refugee youth; and the Lance Armstrong Foundation – uniting people in the fight against cancer.

Nike Australia will donate 20 per cent of the $60 online race registartion fee to a runner’s chosen charity, and runners will be able to donate additional amounts online. Globally, Nike will donate US$1 million to the three charities.

Carlton supporters are encouraged to celebrate the end of the 2008 home and away season by participating in this event, and you don’t have to be in Melbourne to be involved. Those in Melbourne can participate in the Nike+ Human Race by running the 10km in Melbourne and those who cannot be in Melbourne on the day can particpate ‘virtually’ by using the Nike+technology. This innovative technology allows runner to track their distances and log their kilimetres online to participate in the global event.
