Gibbs unaware of record-equalling feat
Bryce Gibbs had 45 possessions on Sunday equalling the Carlton record, but he says he had no idea why the crowd was cheering every disposal
The 21-year old received a roar from the crowd every time he touched the ball in the dying minutes of the final term, as the Carlton supporters desperately wanted to see their classy defender surpass the record number of possessions held by Greg Williams at the club.
He finished with 45 possessions - equal to the record achieved by Williams back in 1993 - as the Blues recorded their sixth win of the season to be firmly entrenched in the top eight.
“You don’t notice it too much - it’s like any other time I suppose, you just get it and get rid of it,” he said.
“You can’t worry about the possessions too much - I didn’t know what the crowd was going on about then (Marc) Murphy was saying you are racking it up - it was weird.”
Gibbs has been a permanent fixture across half-back since the Blues defeated Adelaide in round four and is enjoying his new found role in the defensive half.
“It’s been alright - we had a few injuries early in the year and Brett Ratten said we will put you back there to get a bit of run,” he said.
“I was flexible whether to play on a tall or a small and he just thought it was a good match.
“I’ve probably learnt a lot in my career early days playing as a back pocket under Denis Pagan playing on the small forwards - I really had to defend first before I could get the ball I think that has really held me in good stead going down back now.”
Gibbs - who just this week signed a two-year contact extension - said the negotiations had little effect on his stellar performance and was now just looking forward to forging a successful career with the Blues.
“It was never really an issue - I had until the end of the year to sign so there was plenty of time,” he said.
"I love the club, I love everyone who is involved and loving that I am going to be here for another two years.”
