New Carlton recruit Sam Dochtery says hikes through the Grand Canyon and to Mount Humphreys are "the two hardest sessions I've ever done in my life".

Docherty has spoken to CFC TV from the Blues' pre-season training camp in Arizona.

He's revealed he made it to the peak of the mountain with a group of teammates including Ed Curnow, Brock McLean and Kade Simpson.

But the 20-year-old says the going was so tough, that the group was only travelling at a rate of about 100 metres every five minutes.

"We got to the saddle where it was freezing cold and we were sinking that far into the ice that we ended up crawling," Docherty said.

"By the time we got there all our feet were frozen and our hands were frozen.

"The snow got really soft, like there had been nobody there, and then every step you'd take you'd just be knee deep."

While the gruelling hikes may be behind them Carlton players are continuing to train at altitude this week – with weights, fitness and conditioning sessions on the agenda for the squad in Flagstaff.
