A fascinating insight into the life of newly-appointed Carlton Coach Mick Malthouse has been captured on film for a series of three 8-minute documentaries to screen on both the Carlton and AFL websites, commencing today.
Entitled Mick Malthouse: No Limits, the production is the culmination of a month’s filming, which began at Visy Park back in February and ended with the Round 2 NAB Cup match against Fremantle.
Mick Malthouse: No Limits, commissioned by the Carlton Football Club and produced by AFL Media, aimed to document Malthouse’s influence since his arrival at VISY Park as Senior Coach.
The first episode explores Malthouse’s “No Limits” manifesto both on and off the ground, as well as his introduction into a new beginnings at the Carlton Football Club.
The episode also examines the notion raised in certain circles that he’s too old to coach.
The second episode (March 19), examines Mick’s coaching style and his relationship with the players, the process of identifying a successor to Chris Judd as Carlton captain and the preparations for the much-anticipated Round 1 and Round 2 matches with Richmond and Collingwood respectively.
The third episode (March 26) homes in on Mick’s unique relationship with Rob Wiley, and showcases the importance he places on family.
Senior Producer Lucas Shearer believed that the series was ground-breaking in a number of areas.
“In terms of the filming element we’ve got Mick miked up at training on the Friday before the Fremantle game; we also followed him around where he spoke about his pre-match routine, and on a drive we even learnt a bit about his music collection too. There’s a bit of Beatles and BeeGees going on, he has pump-up music, but he also has music to relax by,” Shearer said.
“We’ve also got footage of him and Rob Wiley working out in the altitude room (and they’re very competitive) and we’ve also got footage of the Malthouse family at Carlton for the first time.
“Basically, this is an insight into how Mick coaches and what he’s like on the training track. After watching it and seeing him talking to the players, I’d want this man to coach me if I was a footballer. How awesome would it be to play under this bloke? – he’s a teacher, he’s also very caring for the players and their families to make sure they spend enough time together, but then there’s the other side of it - if you put a foot wrong he’ll be there to pull you up.”
