Carlton's Heath Scotland has ruled out reaching 300 AFL games – but says he would like to play on next year if his body is up to it.

The 33-year-old has 262 games under his belt already, but has told radio FIVEaa the future is uncertain.

"No I won't get to 300," Scotland said. "I'm not sure about next year, I've left it with Mick at the moment and we will sit down once the season is finished.

"To be honest I would like to go on, but I have a few things to go through to make sure the body is sound next year."

Scotland began his AFL career at Collingwood and has this year found himself reunited with coach Mick Malthouse.

The Blues veteran says time hasn't mellowed Mick, who Scotland says still has plenty of fire in the belly – and can dish out a good spray.

"He's a competitive animal Mick, and he doesn't like to lose, so you see the fierceness come out in him in those situations.

"I've really enjoyed being under him again this year, and so have the players, so it's been a really good learning year for us."

Carlton travels to Adelaide this weekend for a crucial clash with Port Adelaide.

If the Blues win they will secure eighth place and a spot in the finals.

Scotland concedes the year hasn't panned out quite as his team had hoped, but their season is still live.

"Our consistency, in terms of our games from our best to worst, has probably got a little bit better. I think we've made improvements there.

"We've dropped a couple of games we could have won and there have been some close games – we've just got to find a way to get over the line in those games and it could have been a completely different season.

"But we find ourselves in a position now where we get a second opportunity, and we're keen to make the most of it."
