After a spirited victory against Port Adelaide on Sunday, midfielder Bryce Gibbs says he’ll “never forget” the look on Kade Simpson’s face when the final siren sounded.
With less than 10 minutes left to play and needing three goals to win, the Blues wrestled back the momentum and booted the required majors to walk away two-point winners and salute their champion in his 250th game.
Speaking to Triple M’s Hot Breakfast in the wake of the victory, Gibbs says he was “rapt” the team could do it for not only ‘Simmo’, but ‘Jamo’ (Michael Jamison) too.
“For those two blokes it was a bit more incentive to get over the line for them,” Gibbs said.
“They are two really great clubmen who have given a lot to the Club over what has been a pretty tough time, and especially for Kade, he’s been one of the most underrated players in the comp I reckon for 10 or so years.
“His face after the game once the siren went is something I’ll never forget.”
A victory built on everything this man stands for. That one's for you, @kadesimpson6. #Simmo250 #BoundByBlue pic.twitter.com/cTvFG2qQOz

In the first eight rounds, Gibbs, who is arguably in career-best form, is averaging over 26 disposals a game, including five tackles and eight contested possessions – and no doubt played a vital role in securing the Blues’ win on the weekend.
Although Sunday’s win over the Power marked Carlton’s fourth win a row for the first time since 2011, Gibbs acknowledged there’s still plenty of work to do.
“I’m really proud of the boys’ efforts over the last month of footy, we’re getting some reward for our hard-earned effort over the pre-season and early in the season, so it’s definitely a good place to be at the moment,” Gibbs said.
“Although we have had a good month of footy we definitely understand there’s a lot of hard work still to go into it.”
The challenges don’t get any easier for Carlton, with the Blues taking on the undefeated Kangaroos on Saturday night – although they might have found a new lucky charm.
“I don’t think he (Marc Murphy) actually needs to wear it (helmet) anymore but we’re making him wear it every week from now on – it might be a lucky omen for us,” Gibbs laughed.
Carlton takes on North Melbourne this Saturday night at Etihad Stadium, with the match kicking off at 7:25pm local time.
