Carlton's newest recruit Matthew Dick plans to be pushing for senior selection in the lead up to the Blues' Round 1 blockbuster against Richmond.

The 20-year-old, who is yet to make his AFL debut, was recruited to Carlton after being delisted by Sydney.

Speaking to SEN on Friday, Dick said he hopes to break new ground after a experiencing a tough year with the Swans.

"The past year was frustrating for me. I was playing some pretty good footy but obviously it's hard breaking into a team that's won 19 games on the trot, so it was hard,” Dick said.

But the boy from Macedon says he learned a lot in his time on Sydney’s list and credits the 2014 grand finalists with giving him a solid grounding at the elite level.

"There's obviously some great names up at the Swans," Dick said.

"Playing in the twos was a great experience for me training next to those guys."

Excited for the future, Dick is looking forward to showcasing his on-field strengths once given the opportunity.

"Reading the play off halfback and then using my speed and kicking length to break the lines – that's something I see as a bit of an attribute for me and hopefully that's something I can bring to Carlton,” he said.

And what was his first impression of senior coach Mick Malthouse?

"I was incredibly impressed,” Dick said.

"He came to me and put a very positive stamp on my game and also the Club and the future of the Club – so that was very encouraging for me and that's something that has helped me with my transition."
