Carlton players have returned to training today – hitting the track for the first time for 2014.

Fresh from the break, players were put through their paces with skills and weights sessions at Visy Park.

Coach Mick Malthouse says the focus for the coming month will be getting the team through training injury free.

“It’s a danger week,” Malthouse said.

“The first week back is always very much a danger week in regards to soft tissue injury and being a little bit excited about the process. But quite frankly it really is a walking stage.”

New Irish recruits Ciaran Sheehan and Ciaran Byrne joined the team at Visy Park for the first time since signing with the Blues.

Byrne was already at home with his new teammates, having taken part in the altitude camp in Arizona.

Malthouse says there was much to be gained from last month’s trip to Flagstaff.

“Like any other training camp there’s a lot to gain from the fact that you’re there together,” Malthouse said.

“Then there’s the fact of getting there with new players and introducing yourself to new players; then there’s the cultural value of going to another country and living among other people.

“There’s also the fitness and the touch components – and we were able to train on a variety of grounds. So it’s a good stepping stone for a lot of young players."

Carlton will hold its first open training session for the year at Visy Park on Wednesday from 10-11am.
