For those who only see Carlton coach Mick Malthouse through the media, you could be forgiven for thinking he doesn’t easily crack a smile.
While Malthouse has an often prickly public persona, those of us who get to see him away from the spotlight see a very different man: a family man, a gentleman, a man who loves his history, and a man who truly cares about those around him.
Filmmaker Peter Dickson had the chance to witness the other side of Mick Malthouse this year, while making the documentary The Chosen Few.
Every senior AFL coach is featured in the documentary, with the exception of Essendon’s Mark Thompson.
With the help of the AFL Coaches' Association, Dickson was granted unprecedented access to the lives of senior AFL coaches at home, at work and on game days.
In the documentary coaches discuss their relationships with footballers and with the media, while former coaches Michael Voss, Scott Watters and John Worsfold speak about the traumatic time they endured when they lost their jobs.
The Chosen Few will air on Friday 26 September on Channel 7 at 9.30pm in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, and in Sydney and Brisbane on 7Mate at 10.30pm.
