Speculation on the playing future of Brendan Fevola ended today when the Carlton Football Club announced Fevola had signed a new three-year deal with the Club.
“We are delighted that Brendan has committed to continuing his career with Carlton, there is no doubt he is one of the most exciting players in the competition,” announced Interim Carlton President Stephen Kernahan.
Fevola, who has kicked 75 goals this season for a career total of 462 goals, the third highest in Carlton’s history behind Kernahan (738) and Vallence (722), was pleased to end the speculation about his future.
“I am really happy this has been finalised. I have always said I want to continue my career at Carlton, this is a great Club and the development and improvement of the team this year ensures there will some exciting times ahead. I certainly want to be part of this,” Fevola said.
“My goal is to be a one-team career player and to be part of a Carlton Premiership team,” he added.
It was recently announced that contract negotiations would be postponed until after the season. However with no external distractions and with an agreement considered to be close, further discussions were held between Carlton and Fevola’s Management, Velocity Sports, and the three-year deal was agreed to yesterday.
Carlton coach Brett Ratten was at the announcement and was also pleased the negotiations had concluded in a positive manner.
“Brendan is a wonderful talent and obviously an important part of our team. His goalkicking is highlighted by the media and supporters but this is only one part of his game. His ability to work for his team-mates and apply forward line pressure are other areas that make him an important team player for Carlton and will be significant for the team going forward,” said Ratten.
Fevola turned 27 in January and has played 159 games for Carlton since making his debut in round 17, 1999 against Collingwood at the MCG. He has been Carlton’s leading goalkicker for the last six seasons and won the Coleman Medal in 2006, the same year he was selected in the All Australian team. A dual pre-season premiership player, Fevola won the Michael Tuck Medal in 2005 and was runner-up in Carlton’s Best & Fairest Award in 2006 and third in 2003.
Recruited from Beaconsfield via the Dandenong Under 18s, Fevola was drafted by Carlton as a 17 year-old with Carlton’s second selection, a third round selection (number 38 overall) in the 1998 National Draft.
