Carlton is sticking with its two-pronged attack through the trade and draft periods, as the Blues work to regenerate their list.
GM – Football Operations Andrew McKay has spoken to radio SEN this afternoon and was adamant the Blues are not rebuilding.
“We certainly wouldn’t refer to it as a rebuild – we think we’ve got a good core group there. It’s more of a regeneration,” McKay said.
“We want to get some young guys in through the draft, we also want to bolster and fix up our age profile. We’re a bit light on in that early 20s area, that 21-22 bracket, even the 23-24 bracket, that we want to boost a little bit.
"The guys we can get into the footy club will play another eight–10 years for us. We saw that with Sam Docherty and Andrejs Everitt last year, we managed to get those boys in their early 20s and get some good draft picks in the door as well, so we’re endeavouring to do that again.”
McKay has confirmed Carlton is working to secure Giant Kristian Jaksch and Bulldog Liam Jones, while he says there has been “interest without commitment” in hard nut Mitch Robinson.
The Blues today completed their first trade with Jeff Garlett finding a new home at Melbourne. McKay told SEN Garlett departs with the Club’s best wishes.
"I think both parties are happy and certainly I think Jeff will do very well at his new home. As people saw he played some good footy for us and I’m sure he’ll play some good footy for Melbourne, so we wish him all the best,” McKay said.
