HEAD of Football Brad Lloyd said Carlton would embrace a skills-based approach to Monday’s return training session.

It was announced on Friday that AFL clubs would return to the track tomorrow, with the first week seeing non-contact drills in maximum groups of eight.

Full-contact training will resume the week following on Monday 25 May.

Speaking to media yesterday, Lloyd said - under the watchful eye of Director of High Performance Andrew Russell - the players would be straight into it.

“There’ll be a lot of getting skills in,” Lloyd said.

“It’s skill-based so there’s no tackling, no wrestling, no contact, no tackling bags — all those sort of things. It might be good for them to start to move around and kick with more than one person.

“They’re itching to get back into it and they’ve done their time, they’re ready to go.”

While this recent layoff period has been compared to an off-season, Lloyd said the training programs that had put in place meant the playing group would hit the ground running.

After all, there’s no time to waste, with less than four weeks until Round 2.

“They’ve been going pretty hard and training at a pretty good level,” he said.

“We’re ready to train, we’re ready to go and the program has been built accordingly so they can jump straight into it.

“It’s not going to be a session on Monday that eases into it: they’ll build on what they’re doing already.”
