THIS all started with a tweet.
Weeks ago, the Carlton Twitter account asked fans not only who their favourite Blue of all-time was, but also their favourite Carlton player who never got enough love.
These were the results.
Presented by CUB, this is the latest edition of Tuesday Tops, looking at the top five fan favourite Blues of the last 20 years.
5. Darren Hulme
This was the sentimental pick. We’re not sure if it was the long-sleeved guernsey, the eagle tattoo, the 175cm frame or the tenacity to throw himself at the contest at every opportunity, but it was probably all of the above. Playing 110 games in the Navy Blue over a seven season stretch, the man affectionately known as ‘Pup’ never gave an inch: if you want to watch one passage of play which summed him up, it’s Round 9, 2001 against North Melbourne. It was Hulme to a t.
4. Nick Duigan
Let’s be clear, here: Nick Duigan was much-loved by the Carlton faithful before the 2013 elimination final. Making an instant impact as a mature-aged recruit, the courageous Duigan slotted in seamlessly to Carlton’s defensive setup in 2011, playing every game in his debut season. While 2013 proved much more difficult than his first two, his parting piece came in front of over 90,000 people at the MCG. Proving to be his second last game of AFL football and only in the team as the latest of inclusions, Duigan - who had kicked six goals from 41 games previously - produced the sweetest of four-goal cameos to break Richmond hearts.
3. Matthew Lappin
Beginning your Navy Blue career with the Mark of the Year against Essendon on debut is one way to endear yourself to Carlton fans. However, that’s not to say that Lappin was a cameo kind of player: rather he was one of Carlton’s finest for a long period of time. Finishing four games shy of 200 Carlton games and with 251 AFL games overall, Lappin could do it all — whether it was down back or up forward, at ground level or in the air. Carlton’s leading goalkicker in 2001, All Australian defender in 2004, a Bluebagger favourite always.
2. Dennis Armfield
DENNIS! If you missed last week’s tweet with Armfield’s highlights being commentated by James Brayshaw and the rest of the Triple M team, we’ve got you covered. There were few who resonated with the Carlton supporters as much as Armfield, who wore his heart on his tattoo sleeve. Providing energy to his teammates, the sea of Navy Blue in the crowd or fans at home, the sight of an Armfield chasedown tackle or running goal was always met with a cheer louder than most.

1. Heath Scotland
A player that was clearly received well by Bluebaggers, which is even more impressive considering he previously wore black and white. As skilful as he was tough and just as comfortable on his left or right boot, Scotland won the John Nicholls Medal in 2012 but never seemed to get the acclaim from opposition supporters. Carlton supporters, on the other hand, were always appreciative of the No.29. A sure thing from 50 on the run, Scotland ended up playing 200 games for the Club, is a Life Member and is still remembered fondly by Carlton fans.
