NORTHERN Blues coach Josh Fraser assesses the performances of all Carlton-listed players who featured in the VFL win against Werribee on Sunday:
Ciaran Byrne
Stats: 12 disposals, 3 tackles, 7 handball receives
From the coach: He’s built his game-loads and form really well over the last month. The defensive side of his game has been sound. He showed his ability to break the lines and give us some run at different stages, his progression has been pleasing and he’ll be pushing for selection in the next few weeks.
Tom De Koning
Stats: 9 disposals, 10 hitouts, 4 tackles
From the coach: Tommy returned from a few weeks out and I thought his centre-bounce ruck-work was really good, showing his athleticism and ability to follow up. He was a little bit rusty around the ground with his marking but pleasingly he put himself in a number of positions to compete. He’ll keep getting better with more game-time and training.
Jarrod Garlett
Stats: 13 disposals, 7 tackles, 5 rebound 50s
From the coach: He played a combination of wing and forward and I thought, despite only having the 13 possessions, he finished with seven tackles. It showed his willingness to get after the opposition and he was quite clean with the ball. We saw some good steps forward from him.
Darcy Lang
Stats: 21 disposals, 10 tackles, 6 clearances, 1 goal
From the coach: There were some really pleasing parts to Darcy’s game, where he showed his speed at different stages with ball-in-hand. He also hit the scoreboard with a nice goal and finished with 10 tackles, which underpinned his performance of getting after the opposition. He showed some things which were above the level.
Kym Lebois
Went off early through injury.
Cameron O’Shea
Stats: 19 disposals, 8 tackles
From the coach: I liked his game purely from a competitive point of view. He gave his opponents nothing and he used it (ball) well on the weekend with his ability to take the option in front of him. He played with a hardness in our defensive half which we really needed.
Sam Rowe
Stats: 8 disposals, 4 marks
From the coach: The general of the back-line in terms of experience and leadership. He had a few important one-on-one contests which we needed him to win and he did. He brought a strong competitive nature to a young group and led the way with his voice, leadership and ability to intercept.
Angus Schumacher
Stats: 23 disposals, 6 marks, 6 rebound 50s, 1 goal
From the coach: 23 disposals, composed with the ball and his ability to use his hands to put players in time and space were features. He’s showing some good improvement in the air with his marking and spoiling craft — he’s a young player who is gaining confidence and is improving his game from the start of the year to where he’s at now.
