THE daughter of Carlton premiership player Andrew McKay is on the cusp of history, as the Club confirms it will formally nominate Abbie McKay as a father-daughter selection at this year’s AFLW draft.

If the Blues successfully recruit the young midfielder on draft day, she will become the first father-daughter player in the AFL Women’s competition.

Recently representing Vic Metro in the under-18 national championships on the Gold Coast, the 17-year-old began her footy career in a team established by her mum at the Prahran Junior Football Club.

Showcasing the country’s best young talent, McKay represented Victoria in last Friday’s under-18 exhibition match at Adelaide Oval and has been invited to participate in the upcoming AFLW draft combine in October.

Making her Carlton debut a few weeks ago for the Blues VFLW side, the midfielder made an impact in her first outing – named in the bests and kicking a goal in the Round 16 victory against Essendon. 

“When I was running out, I heard someone yell out go Blues, and I thought, wow, this is so weird … this is Carlton,” McKay told the Herald Sun.

“I feel comfortable here; it’s my personal goal to play here, not necessarily just because Dad played here.” 

Andrew McKay is a four-time All Australian who played 244 for Carlton between 1993 and 2003. He is a member of the Blues’ Hall of Fame and served as the Head of Football for nearly seven years.

The third NAB AFLW Draft will be held on Tuesday 23 October 2018. With the AFL’s father-daughter nomination period beginning today, clubs have until Friday 28 September to officially lodge their paperwork.
