OVERVIEW

2020 will undoubtedly be a season to remember for a childhood Bluebagger.

It was a busy year for Carlton’s brutal midfielder, who balanced her duties as the team’s Recruiting Manager with her role as co-captain alongside Kerryn Harrington.

It’s fair to say that the 34-year-old did not miss a beat on either front.

A testament to the high esteem that her teammates hold her in, Loynes was voted in as part of Carlton’s new-look leadership group consisting of her fellow co-captain Harrington, Alison Downie, Nicola Stevens and Sarah Hosking.

Ever the warrior on the field, the veteran played the only way she knows how to. If you weren’t seeing Loynes on the bottom of the pack, you’d see her hurling her body through the air to spoil a mark, or throwing herself recklessly over the boot of the opposition to smother a kick.

BEST PERFORMANCE

It was the 2019 Grand Final rematch which brought out the best in the co-captain.

Spurred by the disappointment of the previous year, Loynes was at her very best in heaping the pressure onto the opposition and willing herself to every contest.

Collecting a season-high 13 disposals on the day, Loynes was a key contributor in a memorable comeback for the Blues against the reigning premier.

Taking the fight to Adelaide on its home turf, the Game Changers left the City of Churches with an eight-point win.

Katie Loynes and Kerryn Harrington lead the Blues out for the first time as co-captains in Round 1 of the 2020 AFLW season.

SEASON HIGHLIGHT

They say a picture speaks a thousand words and it has never been more true for the moment Katie Loynes was able to lead her beloved Bluebaggers out for the first time as co-captain in 2020.

In front of a packed Ikon Park under Friday night lights, Loynes and Harrington - former Diamond Creek teammates in their own right - led the Game Changers out arm-in-arm in a historic season opener against Richmond.

You couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces if you tried.

The co-captains led the Blues to a big victory over a (new) traditional rival, setting the team up for the best possible start to the 2020 season.
