THE performance may have been a one off (for now), but it was certainly an impressive one from new Blue Jack Martin.
The dynamic recruit’s 17 disposals and four goals in an explosive role up forward has earned him a spot in AFL.com.au’s Round 1 Team of the Week.
His six marks were the third highest on the ground behind Marc Murphy (eight) and skipper Sam Docherty (seven), while he had a match-high 10 score involvements.
Martin booted his four majors from five disposals in a third term that saw the Blues swing the momentum drastically.
Trailing by 50 points more than halfway through the third quarter, Carlton rallied against the reigning premiers to trim the deficit to 15 points early in the final term.
Richmond ultimately held on but the performance produced many shining lights, of which Martin was arguably the brightest of them all.
Since arriving at Ikon Park at the end of November last year via the pre-season draft, the 25-year-old has made an impression on his teammates: Senior Coach David Teague praised Martin’s ability to set an example from the outset.

“When things aren’t going well he competes, he’s tough, he has a real crack,” Teague said.
“That is just what we need, we need more of him… Jack was one player who could hold his head up in that area, he was very strong in the contest for us.”
The Carlton faithful will have to wait a bit longer to see Martin in action again, but if his Navy Blue debut is anything to go by, it will be worth it.
