AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has announced changes to the 2020 AFL and AFLW seasons, as things stand.
— The AFL season will be reduced to 17 games, compared to 22. Every team will play each other once.
— There will be a decision to come on the AFLW season and finals setup, with “flexibility” required.
— A decision on Round 1 going ahead this weekend will be made tomorrow.
— The first four games of the AFL season will remain as fixtured, with dates open to changing. It means Carlton’s first four games will come against Richmond, the Western Bulldogs, Essendon and Sydney respectively.
— If a player tests positive to COVID-19, the AFL would be forced to “down tools” across the competition.
— The VFL, VFLW and state league seasons have been postponed until 31 May.
— A mini-draft is possible to supplement AFL lists.
— There is a commitment to finishing the season with the current final eight format, whether it takes place in September or otherwise.
