SENIOR Coach Daniel Harford was full praise for the Blues after their eight-point win against Adelaide at Richmond Oval this afternoon.
While some dubbed the match the ‘Grand Final rematch’, Harford was keen and quick to remind the girls that last year was in the past.
What ensued was one of the Game Changers' most memorable wins in their short history.
“We came into today thinking today was about today,” Harford said.
“What had happened had happened and that was really important for us as a footy club to understand is that what’s done is done, there’s no point worrying about that.”
In muggy conditions, the Blues started three goals down, but things turned around after outstanding performances from player such as Darcy Vescio, Madison Prespakis and Tayla Harris.
While they're very much established names, Carlton's younger brigade also rose to the occasion.
Defender Charlotte Wilson, who managed 19 disposals and nine marks herself, said that the lift in some players inspired the whole team.
“I think when one player really gets up, then it really helps the rest of us get up,” Wilson said.
“When we just carry that positive energy through, it’s just a really good vibe out on the field.”
Carlton had never beaten Adelaide before in its AFLW history, with Harford believing this will have a huge upside for the team's confidence.
It also happened to be the Game Changers' best turnaround in a game, having never recovered to win from an 18-point deficit before today/
“To beat an opponent that you’ve never been able to beat is a real confidence booster,” Harford said.
“Hopefully we’re able to harness that and understand that any given week, we are a chance should we do the right thing.
"It's about confidence and knowing you can. As a coach, all you want is for your players to believe that and buy into that: we saw that today."
The Blues now sit a game clear in the top three of Conference B at the halfway mark of the season.
In a game where physicality and run was a must, Wilson is confident that the team has what it takes to get through those tough situations where the pressure is on.
“I think we were definitely tired towards the end of the game,” Wilson said.
“But we’ve put in so much work over pre-season and throughout the start of the year that I think we could really just trust our legs and trust each other to get the ball over the line.”
