FOR Darcy Vescio, the opportunity to run out in the annual AFLW Pride Game is both and honour and a responsibility.

Travelling to enemy territory, Carlton claimed its second win of the season against the Western Bulldogs in the third Pride Game the Club has participated in.

Designing this year’s Pride guernsey on behalf of the playing group, Vescio spoke on what the occasion meant to her on Triple R following the clash.

“Coming from Darebin, we had such a diverse community. So we’ve always held those values close to our hearts,” Vescio said.

“Coming into Carlton and then us having the opportunity to have the Pride Game with the Bulldogs, it just seemed like a natural progression.

“As our platforms have risen with AFLW, it seems like the responsible thing to do.”

In the week leading up to Sunday’s clash, Carlton Pride treasurer Rochelle Pattison visited Ikon Park to share her story as a transgender woman with the playing group.

Impacted by her story, Vescio was grateful for the opportunity the playing group had to give Pattison’s experience a platform.

“We had Rochelle come in from Carlton Pride - who’s a transgender woman - and share her story,” she said.

“Just the girls being able to see someone who is trans and also hear the hurt and also the strength that they show through their story is really important.”

Beyond her involvement in the Pride Game, Vescio is also a multiculturalism ambassador for the league.

“I remember just not really thinking I was any different and as you grow up, you realise that a journey you’ve taken can be shaped by the way people look at you rather than how you just see yourself,” she said.

“For me, I’ve come to realise who I am a bit more and through ambassadorships like multiculturalism and that sort of thing, that has helped me discover a bit more about myself.”
