A STIRRING performance against the Brisbane Lions at Marvel Stadium saw Carlton finish 15 points triumphant over the visitors.

Among a host of standout performances, dynamic forward Charlie Curnow was formidable with six marks and three goals come the final siren.

Speaking post-match, Curnow reflected on the win after what was an emotional week for the Blues under new caretaker coach David Teague.

“It was awesome to get the win today. It’s a great feeling when the Blues supporters get up and about and you can really feel them,” Curnow said.

“I think ‘Crippa’ and Sam Docherty have done an awesome job this week to keep us all together. 

“It’s been a tough week but I think we’ve come out on the other side.”

It looked worrisome for the Blues early, with the Lions kicking out to a 37-point lead at one stage in the second quarter and Carlton yet to notch a major.

But in an inspiring comeback, Carlton continued to take the game on while tidying up its efficiency to storm over the top of the Lions. 

“We were playing alright, we just weren’t scoring,” he said of the opening term.

“‘Teaguey’ gave us a lot of confidence at quarter time to take the game on. We needed to kick a score and that’s what we did.”

Still trailing by three goals at the main break, the Blues truly took hold of the game in the third quarter in a fightback which had the 32,211 fans in attendance full of voice.

Curnow shed some light on Teague’s message at half time which saw the Blues muster such a rousing performance.

“It was the same message he has had all week. Play your role, your time will come. Play on instinct and have fun doing it,” he said.

The Blues will have good memories of next week’s opponent, facing the Western Bulldogs for the second time this season.

After recording a win over the Dogs in Round 5, Curnow is hopeful the Blues will be able to harness the confidence from today’s win to down the Bulldogs once again.

“Hopefully we just bring the same sort of effort. If we tidy up a few things from the first quarter I think the boys are going to play with confidence next week,” he said.
