Just who is Carlton’s greatest player? It’s a question that has forever and a day provoked heated discussion amongst any Blue believers blessed with an opinion.
And in this the 150th anniversary of its hallowed existence, the Carlton Football Club has seen fit to settle the debate by naming Numero Uno and the cream de la crème of its senior playing ranks – the top 12 Carlton players of all time – in order of merit.
Number 5: Stephen Silvagni
In a playing career spanning 312 games through 17 seasons, Stephen Silvagni well and truly kept his part of the bargain, in what remains this club’s greatest father/son combination.
Sporting the famous No.1 guernsey of the Silvagni patriarch Serge, Stephen, by his deeds, brought honor and glory to the great Australian game’s greatest and most iconic brand.
A two-time club Best and Fairest and Premiership player (who could forget his 1995 finals series in claiming the scalps of Daryl White, Wayne Carey and Gary Ablett senior?) Stephen earned both AFL and Carlton Team of the Century postings at full-back in a glittering career with the club to which the name Silvagni is forever linked.
Will the father/son rule soon yield yet another Silvagni?
