After years of hard work on the training track, AFL players could be forgiven for taking it easy when they retire – but former Carlton player Barnaby French certainly isn't doing that.
French is training for the 2015 Port Macquarie Ironman to raise money and awareness for Ladder, a not-for-profit organisation tackling youth homelessness.
Ladder was formed by a group of AFL players in 2007 and French is excited to jump on board as a mentor.
“I’m passionate about working with people and assisting those in need, and being a Ladder Mentor allows me to give back and help someone who hasn’t had the same support and opportunities as I have,” he said.
French, who was traded to Carlton in 2002 from Port Adelaide, will have to complete a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride and 42.2km run.
The former Blues' No.11 played 71 games for Carlton from 2003 to 2006 and kicked 20 goals.
