Former Adelaide Crows coach and South Australian Hall of Famer Neil Craig, has joined Carlton’s new-look coaching team.

The 59-year-old has been appointed as the Director of Coaching, Development and Performance at the Blues, taking over from Rob Wiley who’s returning home to WA.

Craig, a veteran of 319 SANFL games, was the Crows’ fitness adviser in their back-to-back premiership victories in 1997 and ’98.

In 2004, Craig took over as Adelaide’s caretaker coach and after being awarded the permanent senior gig, led the Crows to their first minor premiership in 2005. In his first two seasons as coach he took Adelaide to successive preliminary finals and five consecutive finals appearances between 2005 and 2009.

In September 2011, Craig moved to Victoria and joined the Demons as their Director of Sports Performance, before most recently working at Essendon as their General Manager of Performance.

Carlton coach Brendon Bolton has told the ABC's Grandstand that he expects Craig will play a key role in developing the Club's line coaches.

"I think really good organisations don't just put people in positions and let them float and hope they do well. You need to have accountability and you need to have people investing in them as a person and in their professional development," Bolton said.

"That's a critical role that Neil will need to do, because I know at times I'm going to be pretty narrow and I'm going to be thinking just about the game, so I want him to invest in our coaches and make sure hopefully in five or six years time they can become (senior) coaches themselves."

Craig is joined on Carlton's new coaching panel by Shane Watson (forwards coach), Tim Clarke (midfield coach) and Dale Amos (backline coach). Meanwhile John Barker will take on the new role of stoppages coach, while Mathew Capuano will remain a development coach.
