On day 10 of the Trade Period, Carlton has not only secured a host of young talent including four young Giants and a Crow, but also strengthened its draft position.
For just the second time in the Club’s history, the Blues will have two picks within the top 10, putting them in a strong position come draft day, and the addition of Liam Sumner, Andrew Phillips, Lachie Plowman, Jed Lamb and Sam Kerridge has bolstered Carlton’s playing list.
Speaking to Trade Radio on Wednesday, Carlton’s General Manager of List Management and Strategy, Stephen Silvagni, says having prior knowledge on the GWS boys made him more at ease.
“Obviously there was a lot that went into the deal and to be able to deal with the Giants was nice,” Silvagni said.
“To have a bit of background on the four boys that were coming through as well obviously made the deal – knowing what you’re getting through the door makes you feel a bit more comfortable.”
As well as the four young Giants, Silvagni also believes Sam Kerridge will provide running power and depth to the Blues midfield.
“We feel that he’ll (Kerridge) really add to our midfield, particularly with the rotations going down from 120 to 90.
“He’s got a really good work ethic and he’s an elite runner and I think he’ll certainly add to our midfield.”
In order to receive Kerridge, the Blues traded Troy Menzel to the Crows. It allowed Menzel, an Adelaide boy, to return home to South Australia after spending three years at the Carlton.
“To do a trade these days you need to be able to give up something to get something.
“We needed to be able to give up something to get pick 28 and Sam Kerridge to then use that pick 28 to basically get those four GWS players – we obviously had to make a decision, and we’ve gone with that.
“I think the two parties involved, both Carlton and Adelaide, were really happy with the way it panned out – both walk away with a really good deal.”
With only hours left of the 2015 AFL Trade period, Silvangi is hopeful a deal can be reached with the Tigers – for Chris Yarran – before the 2.00pm deadline.
“I think we’ve made it really clear to Richmond some time ago that an end of first-round pick wouldn’t get it done – they were well aware of that.
“Obviously they’ve got pick 12 at the minute so I’ve spoken to Richmond and we’re still working through a few things and hopefully we can come to a solution.”
