Carlton’s CEO Steven Trigg says he was “expecting some sort of change” to the Blues’ fixture in 2016, but not quite to this extent.
After featuring in six Friday night games in 2015, and only two of those being home games, Carlton will not play Friday night football in 2016.
The Blues, who were decimated by injury and suffered a tumultuous year, were unable to win any Friday night games last season, going down by an average of 75 points.
Trigg says while it’s a disappointing outcome for the club, he knows Carlton must “earn back” its right to prime-time television slots.
"We don’t like it and it's an almighty backhander," Trigg told carltonfc.com.au.
"It's fair to say what we served up on Friday night fixtures last season didn't help.
"We were expecting some sort of change but to have zero is in stark contrast to the year before.”
Carlton is not the only team missing Friday night fixtures, with other clubs above the Blues also lacking exposure on the big stage.
"There is some context, I'm told there are five or six teams above us [on the ladder] with no Thursday or Friday night fixtures either.
"So, it's not the sole territory of the Blues."
Although Carlton may not feature on Fridays, the Blues will continue their traditional season-opener against Richmond, with the match being penciled in for Thursday March 24 at the MCG.
With Carlton set to play plenty of games on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, Trigg believes this opens the door for more families to enjoy the footy.
“We have a glass half-full approach.
“You can dwell on the negatives, but our objective is to make our match days as good as we possibly can for our junior members and their families, and to make the most of the earlier afternoon timeslots for our older generation of supporters.’’
The full season 2016 fixture will be released Thursday.
