Carlton’s David Ellard will hang up the boots after Saturday’s clash with Hawthorn, which will bring to an end a career that’s spanned eight seasons.

Ellard told teammates of his decision this morning, saying he has an opportunity to embark on a new career, so the time is right to begin the next chapter.

The 26-year-old was recruited to Carlton with pick No. 34 in the 2007 Rookie Draft. He made his debut in Round 7, 2008 against West Coast in Carlton’s No. 46 jumper. Saturday’s match against Hawthorn will mark Ellard’s 63rd AFL game.

Carlton’s Head of Football Andrew McKay has thanked Ellard for his contribution to the Blues.

“David is the kind of player who you know will give you everything every time he runs out,” McKay said.

“His professionalism and work ethic has made him a terrific role model for our younger players.

“Away from the field David has done a lot of work in the community, as well as working hard to set himself up for a life outside of football, and the way he has gone about it is a real credit to him.

“On behalf of everyone at Carlton I would like to thank David and wish him well for the future.”
