Carlton midfielder Dale Thomas is starting to reap the rewards of the long hours and hard work he put in during the Club’s gruelling pre-season.
‘Daisy’ has played a vital role in all of Carlton’s three wins this year, kicking goals, laying tackles and putting pressure on opponents – it’s clear he’s “fighting fit” and enjoying his football.
With the Blues striving to record their fourth win in a row against Port Adelaide this Sunday, Thomas told Triple M’s Rush Hour it’s pleasing the group is getting “reward for effort”.
“I think certainly at the minute we’re starting to get some reward for effort, both personally and as a team,” Thomas said.
“It’s been a long, hard summer and to be fit and firing and not injured at this part of the year, which I haven’t done for a while, is good.”
The 28-year-old’s tackling and pressure have been highlights of his game this season, and as a result, he’s currently ranked fourth at the Blues for tackles.
Last week against Collingwood, Thomas notched up 21 disposals and applied three tackles – producing a solid game against his former side.
In the lead-up to competing against the Pies, Thomas says he tried to keep his routine as normal as possible to block out any “emotion” creeping into his game.
“They’re all nice to win, but I sort of had to take the emotion away from the Pies game,” Thomas said.
“I just tried to keep the last week as simple and basic as possible and was able to contribute in a winning side, so that’s another win for the group and we’re heading in the right direction and working hard.”
One player whose work ethic has never been questioned is Kade Simpson, a veteran of the Club who will reach his 250th milestone against Port on Sunday.
Thomas praised his vice-captain for the service he’s given Carlton over more than a decade.
“He certainly has been (a great player) and over a long period of time…he’s an old fashioned footballer who has a crack, ever reliable, ever consistent and just gets it done,” Thomas said.
Carlton takes on the Power this Sunday at Etihad Stadium, with the match kicking off at 1:10pm. Make sure you head to www.ticketmaster.com to secure your tickets.
