After eight months on the sidelines, Carlton’s cult hero Dennis Armfield is enjoying being back out on the park.
The dashing midfielder-forward broke his right arm in Round 15 last year, and after suffering numerous setbacks, finally made his long-awaited return to senior footy in Round 6 against Essendon.
“It’s was good to be part of it, the last three (weeks) and three wins for me, so it’s going well,” Armfield told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Thursday.
Last year’s winner of the Jim Stynes Community Leadership award highlighted his teammates’ “effort” over the last few weeks, especially in the nail-biting win over Port Adelaide.
“It’s just the effort by the boys, the effort is there,” he said.
“You can tell on the weekend we never gave up, we were 18 points down at one stage late – effort and structures, we’re just playing to a system which is what we want to do.”
The 29-year-old is clearly relishing life under coach Brendon Bolton and his group of assistants, who are instilling confidence and belief in the group.
“He (Bolton) probably taught us to believe,” Armfield said.
“I know you hear it all the time but he’s a great teacher, both on-field and off-field.”
This weekend the Blues take on North Melbourne, which is sitting undefeated on top of the ladder.
With the Blues coming off a six-day break, Carlton will have to be on its game to have the chance of beating the Kangaroos.
“Credit to North Melbourne, they’re undefeated and going along very, very nicely so we’ll need a lot of things to fall in place for us to go well,” Armfield said.
