The Northern Blues were unable to get the win in Cameron Wood’s milestone VFL game on the weekend against Werribee. 

In what was Wood’s 100th VFL match after spells at Collingwood and Williamstown, it was a disappointing end for the club and the individual at a venue where he played his first VFL game eight years ago.

Wood said that his century of games was an unexpected but welcomed milestone after playing nearly a decade at the level.

“It’s been a journey, I actually played my first VFL game out at Werribee in 2008 for Collingwood, my first of about 50 or so there before 20 at Williamstown and then the remainder here,” Wood said.

“It probably wasn’t something I set out to achieve early on but I enjoy my football wherever I’m playing.” 

On the result, Wood said it was an upsetting performance from the collective, especially given how the last quarter panned out.

“We had a promising first half in that we were still in the contest, even though we weren’t playing great footy,” Wood said.

“To blow it out in the last quarter was really disappointing - we went away from our structures, we let them get a run on and our pressure certainly dropped.”

Wood said ahead of game No.101 this weekend, the Blues will have to adjust following a disappointing performance against Werribee.

With the loss on Sunday providing a serious dent on Northern’s final chances, Wood said the upcoming game against Richmond was an important step in having a strong finish to the year.

“As ‘Frase’ said after the game, as disappointed as we are with the performance, we have to get out there on Saturday against Richmond and do what we can to fix it,” Wood said.

“There’s still three games left and we’ll be going out to win all of them.” 

Northern Blues senior coach Josh Fraser paid testament to Wood post-game, saying the milestone was a reward for perseverance over a long period. 

“One-hundred games is a fantastic achievement at VFL level, it’s arguably the best competition outside of the AFL so for him to be able to reach that landmark is really significant,” Fraser said. 

“It’s another reason why I would’ve liked to put a better effort forward today, in a performance that where we were left really disappointed with the result given our effort.”

The Blues return to Ikon Park on Saturday afternoon when they host Richmond from 2pm.
