Carlton coach Brendon Bolton says he expects the Carlton faithful to be out in full force at the MCG on Saturday night.
The Blues take on their old enemy Collingwood in a home clash, with third-generation forward Jack Silvagni’s impending debut and Andrew Walker’s 200th game adding extra anticipation to what is already the most famous of all rivalries.
“For the Bluebaggers out there, it’s a significant game for our club,” Bolton told the media on Friday.
“Saturday night footy [against the] rivals … I think everyone’s really looking forward to the contest.
“I think the occasion should have both teams up.”
Silvagni’s much-anticipated debut will come 58 years after his famous grandfather Sergio first ran out, making the Silvagni family the first in Carlton history to have represented the Club through three generations.
Despite the famous dynasty and the emotion surrounding it, Bolton was quick to reiterate that Silvagni, who has booted 13 goals in his past four games at VFL level, had earned his debut.
“It (debut) was an earned right but one I would have thought his family and our footy club’s proud of, and really excited about,” he said.
“He has worked incredibly hard in the gym … Now he’s starting to build his body, he’s giving himself a chance.
“Form is the next dictator and he’s played really well.”
History will also be made on Saturday night when Walker notches up the double century.
Bolton was full of admiration for the high-flying forward.
“I think it’s really important that I do mention Andrew Walker. He’s the first Indigenous player at our football club to play 200 games, so that’s an important milestone,” he said.
“Over his career he’s faced adversity with his body but he’s never let that impact him in his mindset.
“He’s an absolute professional.”
The Blues are striving to do the double over Collingwood in one season for the first time since 2012, but won’t allow complacency to creep into his side after a 15-point victory over the Magpies in Round 7.
“We’ve got to understand there’s still the contest to go out and deliver on,” he said.
“We haven’t beaten them yet.
“It’s going to be a great challenge for us.”
Saturday night will no doubt be a showdown of mammoth proportions with the traditional rivals going to battle for the eighth annual Richard Pratt Cup, kicking off at 7:25pm AEST.
