Carlton has secured the No. 3 selection – the first pick of the Victorian-based clubs - in the inaugural AFLW draft.
A draft lottery that took place during Essendon’s Women’s Networking Luncheon at Crown Casino on Thursday, decided the final draft order.
The eight clubs, in alphabetical order, took turns to draw a football out of an enclosed barrel. On each ball was a number determining the order of the draft, which will follow a snaking order.
Carlton’s marquee player Bri Davey selected the ball carrying the No. 3, meaning the Blues will also have picks 14, 19, 30, 35, 46, 51, 62, 67, 78, 83, 94, 99, 110, 115, 126, 131, 142 and 147.
The women’s draft will be held at the NAB Arena on Wednesday 12 October, with each club selecting 19 players.
Clubs can only select players who are based in their own state, so Adelaide is unable to pick any players from Victoria, and vice versa. Therefore if Fremantle and Brisbane obtain picks one and two and Carlton secures pick three, the Blues will have the first selection of Victorian talent. Each team will have nineteen picks.
Carlton has already secured the signatures of marquee players Bri Davey and Darcy Vescio, as well as pre-signing recruit Lauren Arnell and rookies, Nat Exon and Kate Shierlaw.
