Carlton’s own cult figure Dennis Armfield has called time on his AFL career, announcing he will retire at the end of the 2017 season.

The 30-year-old informed the Club’s playing group of his decision on Monday afternoon.

A long-time fan-favourite amongst the Blues faithful, Armfield grew up playing Rugby Union but soon switched codes and was drafted from Western Australia in 2007 as Carlton’s third-round selection. The speedy forward went on to make his debut in Round 10, 2008 against Geelong.

Armfield said the time was right to hang up the boots after 10 seasons at the Carlton Football Club.

“Carlton has obviously been incredibly special to me over the past decade. This place has been my second home and the people; my second family. I am indebted to the Club,” Armfield said.

“I have no doubt it’s going to be pretty hard to leave, the friends and memories I have made here will stay with me for life. But, with the number of exciting young players now coming through, the time feels right to call time.

“I also want to thank our fans for their incredible support over the journey too – they are the lifeblood. As a club, we’re now well and truly on the right path and I hope my teammates experience the ultimate success in the not too distant future.”

A passionate contributor to various charities, Armfield was recognised at the Brownlow Medal with the Jim Stynes Community Leadership Award in 2015 for his work as an ambassador for Odyssey House Drug and Rehabilitation Centre. Armfield has also been a regular volunteer at the Royal Children’s Hospital and The Big Issue.

Armfield was voted into the Blues’ leadership group for the first time in early 2017 and took on a part-time specialist-coaching role with the Blues’ inaugural AFLW side earlier this year.

Head of Football Andrew McKay paid tribute to the veteran for his well-rounded services to the Carlton Football Club.

“Dennis was the epitome of a team-first footballer and he has been a very loyal servant of the Carlton Football Club for over ten years,” McKay said.

“He has been a fantastic role model for our younger players and along with his on-field contribution, has been a passionate ambassador for a number of charities who have benefitted from his work in that space. His recent integration into the Club’s AFLW program speaks volumes of his genuine passion in helping others.”

“Importantly, on behalf of everyone at the Carlton Football Club, we wish Dennis and his wife Abby the very best for their future.”
