The Carlton Football Club is pleased to be supporting the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation through the promotion of Blue Ribbon Day, this Sunday September 29.

Blue Ribbon Day is a public day of Remembrance for police killed in the line of duty. It is also an occasion when a grateful community can show their appreciation and support to all serving members of our Police Force.

Carlton players attending the Brownlow Medal wore the Police ‘Remember’ lapel badge to the prestigious event to help raise awareness of this important day for the community.

“We were all very pleased to wear the Remember lapel badge to the Brownlow to show our support for our Police,” said Marc Murphy.

‘Remember’ is a symbol to honour the memory of police officers killed in the line of duty. One such person was Robert Lane, a Senior Constable with Victoria Police who was killed while on duty in July 1979. Robert Lane played two games for Carlton and is the only senior AFL player to be killed in the line of duty for Victoria Police. In 2007 Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation has honoured the memory of Robert Lane through their “Spirit of Football Awards Program” in the Swan Hill region, the region where Lane was killed.

While unable to take the Blue Ribbon Foundation’s latest product to the Brownlow, the Carlton players were happy to promote “Buff” the police dog puppy. “Buff” is a 30 cm soft and cuddly toy dog that is made of quality materials and is machine washable. He is fitted with his very own police coat and is available from RACV outlets in Victoria, the Police Museum, Police Academy and selected Police stations.

“Buff is sure to be very popular, not only with children but also with adults, particularly young women, judging by my girlfriends reaction when she saw Buff the police dog,” Murphy added.

Blue Ribbon Day – Sunday September 29
This is a day of expression of remembrance, support and appreciation from the people of Victoria for their police force. It not only remembers the heroic actions of the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty but also gives us an opportunity to simply say “thank you”, on one special day each year, to the men and women in blue who serve our community so very well.

Everyone can participate in Blue Ribbon Day by collecting a ribbon to wear on your lapel, a ribbon for your car aerial or a decal for your car window. Available at the following outlets:
• Police Stations
• Authorised Newsagents
• RACV Shops
• 7-Eleven Stores
• Landmark
• Larger RSL Clubs

Ribbons are free but you can make a voluntary donation that will help build the hospital facilities that remember the sacrifice or our police officers.
