Matthew Kreuzer isn’t normally one for fuss and fanfare... but he was more than happy to be front and centre at Preston’s City Oval for today’s much-publicised launch of the Northern Blues.

The big fellow is of course a northern suburbs boy born and bred, having chased the leather for St Mary’s and, later, Loyola College before developing his craft with the Northern Knights.

“This is a great thing for both clubs,” Kreuzer said following a press conference to herald in the new alignment between Carlton and the club formerly known as Northern Bullants.

“Being an old northern suburbs boy, I think it’s terrific that a player’s career pathway can involve the entire northern region.”

If outside appearances are anything to go by then Kreuzer remains gloriously unaffected by his lofty standing in the game as Carlton’s priority selection (No.1 overall) in the 2007 AFL national draft.

“It was a bit easier for me,” said Kreuzer of the transition from local footy to the big time. “Obviously living at home and playing nearby at the Northern Knights made it easier for me... and Carlton’s only ten minutes down the road.”

At 22 and with 68 senior appearances to his name, Kreuzer predicts he’ll remain a northern suburbs homeboy “until I get thrown out”... so don’t expect the routine to change too much in the next year or three.
