The Carlton Football Club has secured its history-making 40,000th member, after Challenge cancer patient Ben Clark was presented with his 2008 membership card by captain Chris Judd.
Through Challenge – supporting kids with cancer - Ben had been invited into the Carlton change rooms to meet the players following Wednesday afternoon’s training session. Judd sprung the surprise in presenting Ben with the membership card which, along with a selection of Carlton merchandise, was paid for by the playing group.
“We knew Ben was coming down and thought it would be good to present him with his own membership as well as some Carlton gear that he can wear and put up in his bedroom,” Judd said.
“Obviously being the 40,000th member makes it very special for Ben and a great milestone for the Club. We thank all the supporters who have become members of the Carlton team in 2008.”
It’s the first time Carlton has hit the 40,000 Membership mark – an unprecedented return on the end of last year’s record-breaking figure of 35,431.
Carlton CEO Greg Swann was also delighted with the growth in membership in 2008.
“This is a further indication of the resurgence of the Carlton Football Club. The growth in membership is important and is a sign of the outstanding support we continue to receive from our supporters, a real credit to those who have joined as members this year,” Swann said.
“It is very pleasing to work with Challenge and other community groups to make a positive contribution to society. The Club, particularly through the players and coaches, is committed to working to improve the lives of many people in all walks of life, and today’s presentation to Ben is another example of Carlton’s work in the community. This commitment is strongly encouraged by the President Richard Pratt and our Board, and we plan to undertake even more community-based activities in the future.”
Challenge is a non-profit organisation, established in 1983, to provide children living with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders with the opportunity to put their illness aside and interact with other children in similar circumstances.
For Ben Clark it was a day to remember and one that will help him as he prepares to return to hospital for further treatment tomorrow.
