WHILE the first to fourth-year players were back for the opening day of pre-season, there was another familiar face running around Ikon Park.
Despite readying himself for what will be his 11th season at the elite level, key defender Liam Jones was back from day one with his less-experienced teammates.
And while joking that it was about “trying to stay young”, Jones was all business as his preparations turn to 2020.
Put simply, the complications which interrupted his otherwise brilliant 2019 season was the catalyst behind his early return.
“I only played 13 games in 2019,” Jones said.
“I missed so much footy with concussion and a few other things: I just missed it so much.
His role for 2020, his intentions for pre-season, his delight at being back.

“I thought ‘I feel ready to go fitness-wise’. I’ve just missed kicking footies with the boys so I came in on day one.”
While he won’t be undertaking every session before the experienced heads come back on November 18, Jones’ comeback before required was a signal of intent for the upcoming year.
It was a career-best season for Jones last year, forming a strong bond with defensive partner Jacob Weitering.
Weitering was one of those who came back in great condition for the beginning of another pre-season: Jones said that was the exciting factor across the board.
“We haven’t seen each other since the best and fairest,” he said.
“The best part about it is everyone is excited and happy to see each other again.
“Everyone is looking fit and looking forward to getting back into it with some hard work.”
With pre-season so often characterised by intense conditions in the Melbourne sun, the proud Tasmanian was more than happy with the wet weather which greeted the Blues on the opening day.
“It was beautiful,” he said.
“We had the later start [on Monday] so we waited for the sun to go and the rain to come out.
“It was fun — you don’t get as tired in the wet weather and I’m used to it. I enjoyed it!”
