Carlton needs to overhaul its playing list and strengthen the connection with its "tribe" of supporters, according to the Blues' new chief executive.

Steven Trigg only moved into his new office at Visy Park 13 days ago, but the long-serving ex-Adelaide chief has already formed a clear idea about the direction the Blues must take.

"I've got a very strong sense that the connection to the tribe can be enhanced. I'm really clear about that," Trigg said at the Blues' pre-match function at the MCG on Saturday.

"And I'm very conscious about looking in the rear-vision mirror too much, but where I've come from they did a pretty good job of better connecting with fans and having people feel like they have a sense of belonging to their club. 

"And I have no doubt that can be improved at Carlton."

Carlton had the ninth-biggest membership (47,485) for its 150th season this year – well behind other big Victorian clubs Collingwood (79,347), Hawthorn (68,650), Richmond (66,122) and Essendon (60,646).

The Blues have also struggled on the field and can finish no higher than 13th on the ladder.

"Quite clearly there's a lot of work to do on this playing list," Trigg said.

"It doesn't run deep enough…list management is an absolute priority. Everything will come from our success on field."
